뉴욕경찰의 의무경찰제도(Auxiliary Police) 소개

한국 경찰과 비교하면 의무경찰제도와 거의 유사합니다.

다만 강제 징집이 아닌 자원봉사로써 활동하는 것이 차이입니다.

그래서 의무경찰보다는 보조? 봉사경찰이라고 하는 게 좀 더 가깝습니다.

 

한국 의무경찰과 달리 상세하게 계급도 분류되어있습니다. 

 

의경을 영어로는 AP 즉 auxiliary police라고 합니다.

뉴욕경찰의 자원봉사 프로그램에 대한 내용을 담은 영상입니다.

 

Auxiliary Police are civilian volunteers.

보조(의무) 경찰은 일반 시민 지원자들로 구성되어있습니다.

 

They do not go through the Police Academy but have a separate training program of 3-months.

또한 경찰학교를 가지는 않지만 3달 동안 나눠서 훈련을 받습니다.

 

Auxiliary Police are not authorized to carry firearms

또한 이 보조경찰들은 무기를 휴대할 수 없습니다.

 

(except in special emergencies where the Police Commissioner designates such authority to them - but this has never happened, not even on 9-11-2001).

하지만 비상시에 경찰청장이 명령을 내리면 가능하지만 그런 적이 단 한 번도 없었으며

 2001년 911 테러 때도 마찬 가지였습니다. 

 

Basically the Auxiliaries assist in traffic control at accidents or crowd scenes

(like with the Pope's visit this week). 

기본적으로 의무경찰은 사고 현장에서 교통 통제나 군중 통제 등을 담당합니다. 

 

 

They also walk foot patrols to give a sense of more police officers on the streets,

의무경찰들은 거리에 더 많은 경찰이 있는 거처럼 보이게 하기 위해 대부분 도보순찰을 합니다.

 

but have to radio for a regular police officer to assist them if they observe a crime or to assist a civilian.

범죄를 목격하거나 시민을 도울 때 쓸 수 있는 무전기는 지급됩니다.

일반 경찰관들하고 유니폼이나 부착물 등은 거의 같습니다.
